'There are thousands of thoughts lying within a man that he does not know till he takes up the pen and writes.'

William Makepeace Thackeray (1811-1863)

WRITING WORKSHOPS

FOR ADULTS:

WRITING CHILDREN'S FICTION: THE BASICS

Have you always wanted to write a children's book but never really known how to get started? Do you have a great idea but no clue how to turn it into a manuscript and then get that manuscript sent off to the right agent or publisher? If so, then this course, in which I endeavour to cover a variety of both the practical and creative aspects of writing for children and getting published, is the one for you! More

FOR CHILDREN:

MAKING ENGLISH ENJOYABLE

Unfortunately, the way in which English is taught at school, with a heavy emphasis on exams and targets, can occasionally end up putting children off the subject altogether! The focus on literary techniques and learning the correct answers to anticipated exam questions can often obscure the beauty of the language, the richness of the history behind a piece of work and the simple strength or value of the content. I want to make English fun for your children and empower them with a real understanding of and feeling for the language. Here's how I plan to do that...

CREATIVE WRITING

For children who already know that they enjoy both reading and writing their own stories, whether for their own enjoyment or in hope of future publication. Come and have fun, learn a little more about writing and let your imagination run wild... More

In case you've come straight from the chill of the world wide web into this cosy and well-lit page with barely enough time to take your coat off and are therefore wondering who I am and why either you or your children would wish to study with me, here's a little more information about me...

As you may have read elsewhere on the site, I am a member of the Society of Authors, the National Association of Writers in Education and the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators. The author of Uncle Alonzo's Beard, I am currently working on two teenage novels and an anthology of comic verse for children.

Passionate about all forms of storytelling, in addition to my writing I am also the Artistic Director of a tiny fringe theatre company, with whom I have produced, directed and on occasion performed in a number of plays. I also work part-time as a library assistant, simultaneously indulging my immense love of books and keeping a close eye on new and old volumes of note for all ages! Last, but understandably for some people definitely not least, I am in possession of an up-to-date CRB certificate.

I have always loved reading and been both grateful for and awed by the power that words have to transform this world or sweep you away to another entirely different one. A good understanding of and dexterity with the English language is a wonderful foundation for success, both as a student and as an adult making your way in the world.  Regular exercise for your imagination is also undoubtedly good for your soul, whatever your age!

If there is anything else you would like to know or any other questions that you would like to ask me, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

I look forward to hearing from you!
