'Poets have been mysteriously silent on the subject of cheese.'

G.K. Chesterton (1874-1936)

My Uncle Alonzo, who’s really quite weird,

Often found people asleep in his beard…

Five people and one pet rabbit, actually!  And they didn’t just use the beard for sleeping in.  In fact, as the story begins they are all living happily together in Alonzo’s beard, sunbathing, tending their crops and hanging out the washing.  And then – on an otherwise unremarkable Tuesday – calamity strikes!  Find out what happens to Alonzo and his beard-dwelling friends in ‘this genuinely funny and inspirationally illustrated new title’.

Five Facts

Uncle Alonzo is one member of a large family – I have written about nine more of his relatives so far, and it is still possible that another cousin or two may turn up before I’m done!

Alonzo was the first family member to spring into existence.  I was having a little case of writer’s block on another project I was working on at the time, so I decided to give my brain a break and try something new.  I turned off my computer, picked up a pen and paper and waited for a moment.  The first two lines popped into my head and Alonzo was born…

A number of Alonzo’s relatives’ stories were completed while I was doing jury service a couple of years ago.  You can spend a lot of time hanging around in the waiting room between cases!

Alonzo’s own uncle is an Italian don named Vito.

Two of the words that were edited out of Alonzo were ‘gay’ (in the old fashioned, jolly sense!) and ‘midgets’.  Can you guess where they might originally have appeared?
